* Forayer: A mycologist on a fungus discovery expedition.
This extraordinary blue mushroom was recently found deep in a Coromandel forest.
In English, it’s official name is the New Zealand Blue Pinkgill.
In Latin: Entoloma Hochstetteri (after Christian Gottlieb Ferdinand von Hochstetter - an Austrian geologist and naturalist who visited NZ in 1858).
In Maori: werewere-kokako translated as the kokako’s blue wattle.
It is also found on our $50 note. New Zealand has the distinction of being the only currency in the world to feature a mushroom. The recent banknote re-design by the Reserve Bank has maintained our native biodiversity theme and the new notes will be progressively released from late 2015. In fact Entolama Hochstetteri has moved from the lower right corner to centre stage.
NEW ZEALAND'S WEALTH IS EMBEDDED IN OUR UNIQUE BIODIVERSITY.
IT'S GOOD TO SEE THE RESERVE BANK MAKING THIS CONNECTION.
